Japanese Western Fusion @ Monks
Kelapa Gading is a suburb we rarely go to but we dropped by Monks one weekday afternoon since we happened to be in the area. Monks is a new cafe that serves Japanese and Western fusion types of food. We loved the Christmas vibe that was already installed even though it was still only November. The space is gorgeous and natural light was at its fullest. The place was a tall one ceiling property but a second floor was built above the coffee bar. Monks is rather rustic and we bet the place wasn’t too expensive to built. It almost look like they didn’t have to put in too much effort to make it look that precious, but it was simply beautiful.
We were enticed by the PBB with beef bacon rolled up in rice, cheese, nori and spicy mayonnaise sauce. The bacon was just slightly burnt. 10 seconds up early would have been perfect.
For some reason what we ordered looked kinda disappointing as compared to other photos everyone else was uploading on Instagram or Zomato. We figured maybe the chef that was working on that day didn’t particularly care whatsoever when it comes to plating, which was quite a disgrace. On the brighter side, we won’t complain much about the the taste because it was not too bad, but nothing to blabber or get hyped about.
This was the most decent dish in my opinion and it is something unique. Though it looks just like any other carbonara, they used ramen noodles, not pasta noodles. The ramen noodles combined with carbonara cream sauce was something unique and new that is worth trying out.
On the contrary, this was the most disappointing dish of all. The hamburg steak served was the toughest overly-burnt meat that we’ve ever tasted. If you carry the poached egg to the side, you can clearly see how black the beef turned out. How on earth did they even dare to serve that to customers?! My friend who was served this barely touched his steak, possibly enunciating that he would not return to Monks.
Honestly guys, as pretty as this place is, the food quality was absolutely questionable. The idea of the dishes on the menu certainly had potential there, but executed horribly by the chef that was on duty. Would we come back and give this place another chance? Maybe not so soon.
