Steer Bar & Grill

Having Steer Bar & Grill just on the next block of my apartment below Olsen Hotel, I never attempted to visit because its a pretty fancy place and I wouldn’t want to dress up just to go, well.. downstairs. It has been though.. a wish list of mine ever since I moved to this apartment. Finally, just finally before leaving Melbourne, we decided to pay this place a visit. Ratings aren’t the absolute best at this restaurant but I have heard so much good things about this place, and several of my friends have claimed Steer Bar & Grill to be their favourite. We went for the Friday’s lunch special at 40AUD, which entitles us a choice of steaks, a starter dish, and a glass of wine. Add just 5AUD for a plate of dessert.

Complimentary Bread

Cabernet Sauvignon

We had a selection of steaks to choose from the lunch special list. The lunch special does not entitle you to select every single one of the listed above steaks, but the ones available are as follows:

Darling Downs Grain Fed Wagyu Flank 7
Sher Grain Fed Wagyu Rost Biff 7+
John Dee Grain Fed Black Angus Scotch Fillet 4+
Steer Grain Fed Black Angus Scotch Fillet 3+
Steer Grain Fed Black Angus Porterhouse 3+
Free Range Black Angus Pasture Fed Scotch Fillet, 2+
Free Range Black Angus Pasture Fed Porterhouse 2+

Fried Zucchini Flowers

To start, I ordered the most precious Zucchini Flower Stuffed with buffalo ricotta within the petals. I was in awe by how delicate the fried flower was and how tasty the mixture of the main subject with tomato ragu puree, and a touch of freshness from the pesto and cucumber salsa can be.

Ocean Trout Gravalax

Both my two boys opted for something a little more meat-ish, as though a chunk of steak afterwards wouldn’t be enough. The Ocean Trout slices were fresh like it should straight out of the water.

Sher Grain Fed Wagyu Rost Biff 7+

Rost Biff is a cut of beef popular for its unique marked flavour. It is great to just roast it in the oven, slice it to strips to stir-fry, or just eat it on its own. I tried a small piece of it from my friend and it sure was succulent and bursting with rainbows and unicorns, really, and I mean metaphorically of course.
All steaks are served with a side dish of your choice from the steak chips (above), winter greens, garden salad, or mashed potato with cafe de paris.

Darling Downs Grain Fed Wagyu Flank 7+
The high level of marbling created that melt-in-your-mouth effect. The flank is usually long and flat, as it comes from the lower abdominals of the cow. The one we tasted with a marbling of 7+ was absolutely tender.

John Dee Grain Fed Black Angus Scotch Fillet 4+

I personally prefer the Scotch Fillet of beef, as the meat is not as thick as a lot of the other cuts. I love the combination of a good sear perfectly cooked to medium. Since Scotch Fillets are found in the areas where the muscles are weak, the meat is usually more tender than other parts of the beef. I got the perfect balance of thickness of my liking, as well as the caramelized flavour from the sear in every bite. I turn a little icky if the marbling is way up to high, and this Scotch at 4+ was just right.

English Breakfast Tea

I got a cup of tea instead of wine to wash off all that umami. The tea used here at the time was Twinnings.

Steer Bar & Grill is a huge restaurant that caters to many Olsen hotel’s guests and judging from the customers we see, many of them seem to be returning customers who would bring a guest or two to introduce them for an amazing steak experience. Look out for the bull statue and you will locate Steer Bar.
