In celebration of our graduation day of no longer being a student and being officially unemployed, we went out to Cecconi’s to commemorate our achievements. We can finally call ourselves graduates of Melbourne University with a bachelor’s degree in hand. Cecconi’s is a white table cloth restaurant serving classic Italian food and how fitting was it to celebrate in a restaurant that specializes in my favourite cuisine? (Just no pizza tonight but its fine!)

We were served with complimentary bread to start with a side of olive oil to dip

San Daniele, Prosciutto, Buffalo Mozzarella, 18AUD + Mushroom Arancini, 12AUD
We enjoyed both starters especially the prosciutto as it was cured to perfection and I loved the smoky flavour it contains. The Mozzarella wasn’t as salty as expected, which was perfect for us. The Italian waitress told us that in some regions of Italy, it is a shame to waste a good prosciutto on a pizza and its better off eaten on its own, or with just cheese and a drizzle of olive oil. No you don’t have to feel ashamed, I like it both ways. The Mushroom Arancini was delightful, erupting a strong umami blow in every bite and the sauce was excellent.

Iceberg, Avocado, Parmesan Salad, Caesar Dressing, 14AUD
The salad was refreshing with generous coatings of the Caesar. It tasted so good but deep down I know the amount of calories it had in the sauce was definitely mountainous.

Rotolo, Baby Pumpkin And Ricotta, Amaretti, Sage Butter Sauce, 28AUD
We had a Rotolo that had nice bits of crumb at several sections of the dish. The overall flavour was sweet coming from the pumpkin, and salty at the same time with savoury cheeses piled on.

Today’s Special – Porchetta

Jan had the special of the day, the Porchetta. The pork had jus concentrated in flavour, accompanied with creamy mashed potato, blended greens and pork crackling. We enjoyed the dish a lot and pairing the red meat with a classic Cabernet Sauvignon was what Jan thought to be, sinful flavour beyond belief.

Pappardelle, Beef, Pork Ragu, Red Wine, Tomato, 34AUD
We did not mention the sizes for the pasta and were assumed the large. That’s the thing about restaurants like these, always be careful on which size you want to order because if its not mentioned, they would always charge you the highest number on the price list. The Pappardelle was great, and the amount of meats given was plenty, but we had a little too much of it and we got a little cloyed up with all the savouries by the end of the night.

It is undeniable that we were a little too greedy and ordered perhaps a little too much. Cecconi’s is my type of go to place for a simple date night in the city as we love a good classic Italian.
