The Lab Nitrogen Gelato
After our satisfying dinner, we headed down to Bourke Street for some nitrogen gelatos at The Lab Nitrogen Gelato. All five gelato flavours that they offer cost 6AUD each. Us girls shared three scoops and we’re pretty much filled up and satisfied. So how do normal ice cream differ from the proclaimed ‘Nitrogen’ gelato?
Liquid nitrogen has a boiling point of negative 195 degrees celsius. Gloves are essential when mixing to prevent.. frozen hands! Liquid nitrogen is used and this element is a quicker tool to cool down the ice cream mixture as compared to a normal ice cream machine. This way of preparation gives off a finer, fresher, smoother texture. It could be a psychological sense but I betcha its true! Nitrogen is not an ingredient. When the liquid nitrogen touches the ice cream mix it becomes nitrogen gas.
Black Sesame, 6AUD
I couldn’t decide if ‘Black Sesame’ or the ‘Salted Caramel Popcorn’ should be my favourite scoop. The Black Sesame has just enough sweetness, its subtle and not too overpowering. At the same time, its cool, creamy and refreshing. The sesame gelato is topped with green tea sauce. By the way.. this is gluten free ice cream!
Mango & Strawberry Danquiri, 6AUD
The Mango & Strawberry Danquiri is both gluten free and dairy free. Not as creamy as the other two, this gelato should be placed under the ‘sorbet’ category. If you’re more adventurous, this would be something for you. It is sweet, sour and very refreshing. Personally, I prefer creamier and sweeter ice creams that will leave me wanting for more.
Salted Caramel Popcorn, 6AUD
The Salted Caramel Popcorn is the sweetest out of the three. Salted popcorn with caramel sauce for the topping just left me scooping till the last drip.
We’re all watching a performance of Breaking Bad as the waiters in laboratory coats and precautionary gloves expertly mix the liquid nitrogen with the ice cream mixture. There are two other flavours called the ‘Milky Chocolate’ that will be served with homemade brownies and ‘Pina Colada Sorbet’ which is made up with pineapple and coconut.
